UPHOLSTERY SERVICES

Fabric

When it comes to upholstery, we understand the importance of using the right colour and pattern. Whether you are after something stripy, spotted, abstract or even animal-inspired, we know that it needs to fit with your other furniture items and home décor. That is why we carry a comprehensive range of designer fabrics, meaning that whatever style you are looking for, we can help. And if we do not have any fabrics you like the look of, or you have something else in mind, we are more than happy to upholster your furniture using your own fabric.

We know that sometimes you might only need a sofa cushion replacing or a seat cover fixing and that you won’t necessarily want to fully re-upholster your furniture. That is why we also offer a re-covering service, saving you the expense of buying brand new furniture.

But we don’t just use fabric to upholster your furniture, we also create a range of home décor items as well. From made to measure curtains and roman blinds to scatter cushions, bedding, and more, we can produce those extra finishing touches for your home. We can also create custom made-to-measure headboards for your home in any shape or size. Just get in touch to see how we can help you with your project.

Traditional

Traditional upholstery dates back centuries and is a craft that requires high quality workmanship and attention to detail. Over the years it has been refined to achieve more elegant and defined shapes which is done by securing the padding with twine ties and using edge rolls. Each piece is first assessed, sometimes stripped to the frame, and we will then begin to rebuild the layers of springs and padding for the area of the item that needs to be upholstered.

When stripping it back to its bare frame, we can do more than just renew how your furniture looks, but we can strengthen its core and assess its joints for stability.

This process commonly uses natural materials such as hessian, hair, cotton, and other natural fibres. At New Leaf, we use individually hand-sprung coil springs with either horsehair or coconut fibre padding. Each item is then hand stitched, leaving you with furniture that has been upholstered to a high standard and that will last a long time. Studwork can also be added, which involves nailing in metal studs around the edges of the furniture. This technique fastens materials and padding to the frame whilst adding a decorative finishing touch.

Another great option is to add studwork to your furniture. This involves nailing metal studs around the edges of the piece in a straight, evenly spaced line. This adds an element of elegance and an extra handcrafted touch that makes your furniture even more unique to you.

Although this method may take a little longer than modern upholstery, it is most certainly worth it. Instead of buying new furniture and replacing your much-loved possessions, give them a refresh and extend their lifespan even further.

Modern

Modern upholstery uses some traditional methods but typically uses more synthetic, man-made fibres. These usually include foam, polyester, and tack roll alongside traditional materials like hessian. We use either elasticised webbing or coiled spring units for the seating. Comfort is also of the utmost importance when it comes to seating, which is why it can be made from foam, hollow fibre, feather & fibre, or foam with a feather wrap. For that extra bit of luxury, feather and down would also make a great option. These materials can also offer more flexibility with design.

Using staples for fixing, Morden upholstery is often a quicker process and with the materials used, it can be more budget friendly too!

Bespoke

When it comes to design, let your creativity flow! We have transformed a Chaise Longue into a bespoke, multi-coloured harlequin centrepiece, and even upholstered a chair inspired by Celtic FC, with a name and number on the back – the possibilities are vast. Why not check out our gallery page to see some of the work we have completed and maybe get some inspiration for your home. You can also find out more about our themed furniture over on our ‘Themed Furniture’ page.

Additionally, we can make individual pieces with custom built frames, made using Beech or Birch Hardwood, unless otherwise specified. These can be made following your own design and vision or we can copy an existing piece so that it will fit into your personal surroundings.
