Scatter Cushions

About Scatter Cushions

Scatter cushions are a great addition to any home. They are soft and flexible, adding comfort for whoever will be using your furniture. They can also be a great way to express personality and can complement elements of your home décor, adding an extra bit of charm and character. When strategically placed they also help bring the different aspects of a room together. At New Leaf, we can create custom-made scatter cushions for your home in various shapes and sizes to reflect your tastes and style. With our wide range of fabric choices, inserts and finishing touches, you can truly make your scatter cushions your own.

Fabric

One of the most important aspects to consider when getting new cushions is the fabric choice. Whether you are looking for plain, patterned, striped, animal print, tweed or even leather cushions we can help with our comprehensive range of designer fabrics. And if you have your own fabric that you would like us to use, let us know and we would be more than happy to create your made to measure cushions with that instead. The other thing to consider when it comes to fabric is the fibre that is used. Some fabric types will be more hard wearing, such as cotton, leather or synthetic materials such a polyester or nylon. These options would be ideal for general use around the home, particularly in areas that see more usage. More delicate materials such as silk and wool would be better suited for use in a bedroom or hallway where they will see less use.

Inserts

When it comes to cushions, it is not just the fabric on the outside that matters, what is on the inside counts too. It can be easy to think that all cushion inserts are the same, but different materials offer different comfort levels. Feather filled inserts offer softness and comfort as well as a natural ‘plumpness’. They do however need regular ‘fluffing up’ so if your cushions will be getting a lot of use this may not be the most suited choice.

Polycotton fibre is a popular choice for cushion inserts because it is lightweight, easy to clean and retains its shape more. These may be more suitable if your cushions will be used on furniture that get a lot of use.

Another option would be foam. This offers comfort, similar to the previous options. However, it is sturdier, providing more support whilst retaining its shape more then other insert materials.

Finishing Touches

Scatter cushions can have a variety of finishing touches added to them. One finishing option that is most common is piping. Piping is made from a length of cord that is covered in fabric and is sewn into the seam of the cushion. This adds texture to the cushion and can add a neater finish to the seams. The great thing about piping is that it doesn’t have to match the fabric used for the main body of the cushion cover. You could have plain piping to finish off a patterned cushion or even bold piping to contrast with a plain but bold cushion i.e. bright yellow piping on a dark blue cushion.

Piping isn’t the only option for finishing off your cushion. There are a range of trim edging options, including pom pom trim edging and tassel fringe edging. These are a brilliant way to add extra texture and detail to your scatter cushions.

We can always offer advice on the type and quality of fabric that we think would be best suited for the type of wear and tear that your items will be exposed to. If you are not sure exactly what it is that you are looking for, get in touch and start a conversation with us – we’re sure that we will be able to help!

We can also create personalised items with themes in mind, including adding names for that extra personal touch. You can find out more about this on our Themed Furniture page.
